Today we had a special presenter come to Coral Sea. Mr. Easton is a local children's author who spoke to us to create our own stories. He is a W & J professor who also writes children's novels. Through his novel, he showed us how to use our lives, or our cultural ID, to shape a story. His wife, Mrs. Patricia Harrison Easton, also spoke to the other 6th grade teams. A special thank-you to them both for coming and enlightening us on the joys of writing.

We're wrapping up our first chapter in math and our Chapter Test is scheduled for Wednesday.  We played Jeopardy as a review for all of the chapter 1 concepts today and the students also have a Chapter 1 Study Guide as a review.

In science, the students created colorful and informative displays of earthquake and volcano locations.  Our next Earth History topic will be investigations and explorations focusing on weathering and erosion and how these forces shape the land.

Nonfiction- October 9, 2012

The above video is for the Scope story that we will be reading tomorrow. Go behind the scenes of our narrative-nonfiction feature with the author. Think about how this is different then writing fictional stories.

Angry Verbs!

Miss Yuhas took over teaching in Mrs. Haddox's reading class. She taught how to recognize an action verb. The students loved the game and integration of Angry Birds. Great job, Miss Yuhas!

In math, the students have been using the order of operations to evaluate expressions and the properties of operations to identify the property used in an equation.  Ask your child to sing the properties of operations song we sing in class to help remember the differences between the properties!

In science we're exploring the three types of rocks in the rock cycle.  The students observe and classify the types of rocks according to their properties and then match specific rock names to the rock samples.
